Use AI tools with authorized app data

Give an AI model a small set of operations your app can perform. This guide connects a model’s tool requests to authorized record reads and a confirmed status update, then returns the results to the model.

The app executes tools. A model request never grants permission to access data or change it. This example uses buffered Responses requests; it does not depend on the proposed streaming result contract.

Before you start

Preview: The rule below requires the custom security-rule filter and payload contexts from the pending API release. Do not deploy this workflow until that API support is available in your region. On an older API, the rule denies unsupported reads and writes instead of falling back to query.

Use an app with AI credits and a compatible model. The example uses an illustrative gpt-6.1-sol ID and Responses function tools. Load both fliplet-session and fliplet-datasources as app dependencies and run the code after Fliplet is ready. Fliplet.AI is preloaded, but this example also uses Fliplet.Session.get() and Fliplet.DataSources.connect().

For a V3 screen, add these eager dependencies to its app resources before running the example:

["fliplet-session", "fliplet-datasources"]

For other app setups, add both packages through dependencies and assets. If your app declares either package as lazy, await Fliplet.require.lazy(['fliplet-session', 'fliplet-datasources']) inside your setup’s error handling before running this code.

Configure a real data source login with the app’s existing authentication flow. A value written with Fliplet.Session.set() is not authenticated identity. Use a dedicated test login data source and two app users for verification. This recipe binds access to that login source; it does not implement login itself. See sessions and data source security.

Create an Assistant items data source with these columns and sample records. Replace the owner numbers with the actual login entry IDs; they are not Studio user IDs. Record references must be unique within each owner.

Reference OwnerId Title Status
ITEM-001 101 Check the workshop checklist Open
ITEM-002 202 Review the equipment list Open

Use this data source only for the demonstrated state assignment. Do not attach hooks that broaden or replace read filters after access validation. Remove consequential data source hooks and log-triggered actions, including email, payment and inventory effects. Repeating an update can trigger those effects even when the stored status stays the same.

Configure record access

In the data source’s Access Rules tab, replace its rules with one enabled custom script rule below. Set LOGIN_DATA_SOURCE_ID to your actual login data source ID. Do not retain a permissive fallback rule: a custom rule denial can fall through to another rule. Keep these rules attached to every app that accesses these records.

The server supplies user, session and the existing entry. The read rule checks the route-supplied filter and requires its owner value to match the authenticated login entry. The app obtains that entry ID from its session to construct the query; the server checks it independently. The update rule checks the stored owner and validates the operation’s payload, permitting only Status: 'Reviewed'. Callers cannot change ownership, references or other columns. It rejects inserts, deletes and array payloads, including commit updates and imports. A query-based update can affect several owned records because the server evaluates this rule for each matched row; this rule does not enforce a single-record request. See custom rule context.

const LOGIN_DATA_SOURCE_ID = 123;
const denied = { granted: false };
if (!user || !session || !session.loggedIn ||
    session.dataSourceId !== LOGIN_DATA_SOURCE_ID ||
    !Number.isSafeInteger(session.entryId)) return denied;
if (type === 'select') {
  if (typeof filter === 'undefined' || !filter || typeof filter !== 'object' || Array.isArray(filter) ||
      Object.keys(filter).length !== 2 || filter.OwnerId !== session.entryId ||
      typeof filter.Reference !== 'string' ||
      !/^ITEM-[0-9]{3,8}$/.test(filter.Reference)) return denied;
  return { granted: true, include: ['Reference', 'Title', 'Status'] };
}

if (type === 'update') {
  // payload contains the proposed operation data; query can be a caller's where filter.
  if (typeof payload === 'undefined' || !payload ||
      typeof payload !== 'object' || Array.isArray(payload)) return denied;
  if (!entry || !entry.data || entry.data.OwnerId !== session.entryId ||
      !/^ITEM-[0-9]{3,8}$/.test(entry.data.Reference) ||
      !['Open', 'Reviewed'].includes(entry.data.Status) ||
      Object.keys(payload).length !== 1 || payload.Status !== 'Reviewed') return denied;
  return { granted: true };
}
return denied;

Users remain entitled to this narrow update through the ordinary data API. Confirmation below prevents the AI interface from making an unapproved change; it is not a server-enforced approval workflow. For changes requiring manager approval or exactly-once external effects, use a separately verified server operation that enforces those requirements.

Run the tool loop

Add this HTML to a test screen. The output uses textContent, so returned text is not interpreted as HTML. Verified operation outcomes remain visible separately from the model answer, including when the final model call fails. Replace the data source IDs in the rule and JavaScript with your own IDs. Log into the app before submitting a question such as “Read ITEM-001” or “Mark ITEM-001 as reviewed.”

<form id="item-assistant-form">
  <label for="item-assistant-question">Ask about an item</label>
  <input id="item-assistant-question" maxlength="1000" required>
  <button id="item-assistant-send" type="submit">Send</button>
</form>
<p id="item-assistant-status" role="status"></p>
<pre id="item-assistant-effects" aria-label="Verified operation outcomes"></pre>
<pre id="item-assistant-answer"></pre>

The loop validates the entire completed response before running any of its tools. The write tool reads the authorized record immediately before confirmation, performs the fixed update and reads it again. If the write response is lost, a readback can establish the observed status. If it cannot, the loop stops without retrying the write. A subsequent explicit request reads and confirms the same proposed change again.

For reader-facing prose, adapt the AI reply presentation guidance while keeping raw response text and verified operation outcomes separate from formatted display. Preserve literal code, structured results and explicitly requested plain text in their required form.

The time limits stop this app’s waiting and tool loop. They cannot cancel an already dispatched buffered model request or data update. A late result is not processed. Keep the pending state until this run settles; do not automatically retry paid calls or uncertain writes.

function_call_output.call_id matches the completed tool request. The loop preserves encrypted reasoning and explicitly converts supported output types into replay input. It rejects unfamiliar output types instead of dropping context. These shapes are specific to Responses; Chat Completions and Gemini require different tool/result formats. See provider function calling.

Verify the workflow

Run this checklist with real app users and a disposable data source. Studio editor access can bypass data security; it does not prove end-user authorization.

  • Read an owned item, then a different user’s item. The second must not enter the model context. Test an anonymous user and a user logged into a different login data source too. Submit raw { OwnerId: 101, Reference: 'ITEM-001' } without a where wrapper and try a direct read by entry ID: this rule must deny both because neither provides the required route filter.
  • Request the fixed change, decline confirmation and verify the row is unchanged. Accept a fresh proposal and verify Status through a server read.
  • Bypass the assistant and try direct updates to another owner’s row, OwnerId, Title and an unsupported status. Each must be rejected by the server. Include a body such as { where: { Status: 'Reviewed' }, Status: 'Open', Title: 'Unexpected change' } to prove a filter cannot disguise the write. Test insert, delete and array-based commit/import requests too. A query update over owned rows may succeed; a query update that also matches another owner’s row must reject the whole update without changing any rows.
  • Simulate a lost write response. If the readback shows Reviewed, display the observed state. If readback fails, show an unknown outcome, stop and retain the user’s request for explicit recovery.
  • Exercise malformed/unknown tools, duplicate IDs, refusal, incomplete output, oversized output and repeated tool rounds. None may cause a write from an invalid response or an automatic retry.
  • Put instruction-like text in an authorized item title. It remains untrusted text and cannot widen the tool allowlist, bypass confirmation or override server rules.

Limits and adaptation

This example bounds requests, calls, arguments and replay history. It does not persist conversations or implement replay of compaction output. The request leaves Fliplet’s server context-management setting in effect; if a response contains an unsupported compaction item, this bounded example stops instead of discarding it. Each submission starts a separate task. It runs online and intentionally uses server reads; it does not queue offline changes.

The fixed assignment is repeatable at the data-state level. It does not provide atomic compare-and-swap, a durable operation ledger or exactly-once side effects. Concurrent changes can occur between the read, confirmation and update. Use a server operation with concurrency control when the approved prior state must still hold at write time.

For read-only assistance, remove the write declaration and executor branch. For a different action, implement its server authorization and retry semantics before exposing it to the model. Keep tools narrow enough to validate every argument and verify the effect.

For progressive display, use the AI reply presentation guide and the streaming contract. Execute tools only after receiving a completed, validated result, never from streamed argument fragments.
