File and image analysis

File and image analysis

Use Fliplet.AI.createCompletion() to summarize, answer questions about, compare or extract information from authorized files and images with a compatible model. This guide explains input and output choices, then provides a complete PDF and image extraction example with browser file selection and protected Fliplet Media retrieval.

Input formats and model compatibility

File support depends on the provider, endpoint, selected model and delivery format. Select a model from the AI model catalog and check its current input requirements before configuring your app’s file picker. A file extension alone does not establish compatibility or analysis quality.

For OpenAI models, useResponses: true selects Responses. Its documented inputs include:

Input Format and processing
PDF Use input_file. Compatible vision models receive extracted text and page images.
Documents and text DOCX, PPTX, TXT and code files use input_file. Text extraction does not include embedded images or charts.
Spreadsheets XLSX, CSV and TSV use input_file. Provider preprocessing includes the first 1,000 rows per sheet. It does not establish complete workbook analysis or formula execution.
Images PNG, JPEG, WebP and non-animated GIF use input_image. Interpretation depends on legibility and model capability.

These are provider-documented input categories, not a guarantee for every file or Fliplet delivery mode. See OpenAI’s file inputs and image inputs for current formats and limits. Other providers and endpoints have their own formats; do not copy a Responses payload into another API.

The example below implements only PDF, PNG, JPEG and WebP delivery as inline encoded bytes. Its allowlist is specific to that example. For another format, verify the complete authorized retrieval, encoding, request and returned content through Fliplet with a representative file before offering it in your app. Do not infer a provider upload API, hosted file store or private URL access from completion support.

Match the result to the task

Choose the requested operation and result before adapting the example. A summary or answer can return prose; a comparison can present supported findings with uncertainty; extraction can return structured fields for review. File input does not require a JSON schema, editable form or save action. Follow the presentation guide for reader-facing text, including supported streaming and safe Markdown rendering. Keep structured values in their intended format and use the app’s existing framework and state conventions.

Use only content the user is permitted to submit and treat instructions inside files as untrusted content. Keep uncertainty or missing information visible. Validate structured results against the app’s data model before saving; model output cannot authorize a write. Large spreadsheets or calculations that require exact results need appropriate data-processing logic in addition to model interpretation.

Before you start the extraction example

Run the HTML and JavaScript below in a web app after Fliplet and the screen are ready. Fliplet.AI is available through fliplet-core. The app needs AI access and credits. This example explicitly selects gpt-6.1-sol; use a compatible Responses model with image/PDF input and structured output support.

The selected file’s bytes are sent to the configured AI provider. Selection alone does not upload a copy to Fliplet Media. Use only files the user is permitted to submit. Provider processing and retention policies still apply; do not promise that the document remains exclusively on the device.

This extraction example accepts one PDF, PNG, JPEG or WebP, capped at 5 MiB before base64 encoding and 7 MiB for the JSON request. These are deliberate application limits. They are not the platform’s upload limits or a promise that every document will fit the model context. Base64 adds approximately one third to the input size. See OpenAI’s file inputs and image inputs for provider requirements. Other file types and native binary reading require a separately verified adapter. Fliplet.AI requires an internet connection; it does not provide offline inference.

Complete file selection and review example

Add this HTML, scoped CSS and all of the JavaScript that follows. Choose Invoice fields for a PDF or invoice image, or Visible image details for another image. Successful extraction creates editable inputs with the model’s evidence notes. Nothing is saved automatically; connect a separate explicit save action only after validating edited values against your app’s actual data model and permissions.

The response uses summary (string), fields (array of {name, value, evidence}) and warnings (string array). When the model returns value: null, the UI labels that field as not found. The reusable schema keeps business-specific field names in the extraction task. Validation rejects an empty field list, duplicate names and invalid shapes. It does not establish whether the names are relevant to the selected task, whether all requested fields were returned or whether their values are correct; the preview makes that limitation visible. The instruction to use null for missing values is a model request, not a completeness guarantee. Check amounts, dates and other important values against the original, and add task-specific required fields to your app’s validator before saving when your data model needs them. OpenAI documents text.format and exceptions such as refusals and incomplete responses in Structured Outputs.

Adapt the extraction task

The same example already includes a second task: choose Visible image details and a photo. It uses an input_image data URL, while PDFs use input_file with filename and file_data. For a maintenance photo, edit MEDIA_TASKS.photo to request visible equipment labels and visible damage; retain uncertainty warnings and human review. It cannot establish hidden damage, safety or the identity of a person.

The file header check catches obvious MIME mismatches. It is not a full document parser or malware scan. A corrupt file with a valid header can still fail at the provider. Keep the original file available for user-controlled retry; changing tasks or pressing Analyze file makes a separate AI request.

Read a stored private file

For an existing Fliplet Media file, authorize and retrieve its bytes before calling analyzeMedia(). Configure file access rules on its folder/file and ensure file-rule enforcement and encrypted storage are enabled for the deployment. Verify an allowed user can fetch the contents while an unauthorized user cannot, including direct backing-storage access. isEncrypted: true below is a prerequisite check, not proof that the access policy is correct.

Configure user rules through Studio’s File Security, for example allow: "loggedIn" or a user-field condition. Test with real login sessions. A token-specific rule grants that token access; possession of an app token does not establish a logged-in app user or record ownership. Rule configuration requires an authorized Studio setup, but the app’s runtime request uses only its own public authentication context.

For a V3 screen, add the registered fliplet-media package to the app resources as an eager dependency, then run the adapter after Fliplet is ready:

[
  "fliplet-media"
]

For other app setups, add the package through dependencies and assets and wait for it to load before running this code. The adapter uses the loaded package directly; it does not require a lazy dependency registration.

The adapter uses the same analyzeMedia() and renderExtraction() helpers from the complete example. Call analyzeStoredMedia(id, 'invoice') from your app’s file-selection handler, then render the returned result inside that handler’s try...catch. The ID must come from a file the user selected through your authorized app flow; never trust selection as a substitute for the server check. Fliplet.Media.Files.get(id) returns the metadata object directly, including name, contentType and isEncrypted.

async function analyzeStoredMedia(fileId, task = 'invoice') {
  if (!Number.isSafeInteger(fileId) || fileId <= 0) throw new Error('Select a valid media file.');
  if (!Fliplet.Media || !Fliplet.Media.Files || typeof Fliplet.Media.Files.get !== 'function' ||
      typeof Fliplet.Media.authenticate !== 'function') {
    throw new Error('Load the fliplet-media app dependency before analyzing a stored file.');
  }
  const metadata = await Fliplet.Media.Files.get(fileId);
  if (!metadata || metadata.isEncrypted !== true || !MEDIA_TYPES.includes(metadata.contentType)) {
    throw new Error('An encrypted PDF or supported image is required.');
  }
  const api = new URL(Fliplet.Env.get('apiUrl'));
  if (api.protocol !== 'https:' || api.username || api.password) throw new Error('A secure API URL is required.');
  const contentUrl = new URL('v1/media/files/' + fileId + '/contents', api);
  // The authenticated URL is used only for fetching from Fliplet, never in the AI payload.
  const response = await fetch(Fliplet.Media.authenticate(contentUrl.href), { redirect: 'error', cache: 'no-store' });
  if (!response.ok) throw new Error('You cannot read this file, or it is unavailable.');
  const type = (response.headers.get('content-type') || '').split(';')[0].trim().toLowerCase();
  if (type !== metadata.contentType || !MEDIA_TYPES.includes(type)) throw new Error('Unexpected file content type.');
  const declared = Number(response.headers.get('content-length'));
  if (declared > MEDIA_MAX_BYTES) {
    if (response.body) await response.body.cancel();
    throw new Error('The stored file exceeds 5 MiB.');
  }
  if (!response.body || !response.body.getReader) throw new Error('This browser cannot read the file as a bounded stream.');
  const reader = response.body.getReader();
  const chunks = [];
  let bytes = 0;
  try {
    while (true) {
      const next = await reader.read();
      if (next.done) break;
      bytes += next.value.byteLength;
      if (bytes > MEDIA_MAX_BYTES) {
        await reader.cancel();
        throw new Error('The stored file exceeds 5 MiB.');
      }
      chunks.push(next.value);
    }
  } finally {
    reader.releaseLock();
  }
  return analyzeMedia(new Blob(chunks, { type: type }), metadata.name, task);
}

The metadata and content requests both pass through Media authorization. A rejected fetch stops the workflow before an AI call. The AI request contains encoded bytes and a filename, never a private URL, app token or signature. The general AI endpoint does not independently authorize a Media file ID; this ordered workflow obtains the bytes through the protected endpoint first.

This adapter deliberately fetches online. Fliplet.Media.Files.getContents() forwards query options and does not provide a binary response override. Fliplet.Media.getContents(id, { responseType: 'blob' }) supports web fetching, but its native bundled-file branch does not establish Blob compatibility. Do not extend this browser example to offline/native storage without testing the actual binary path.

Failures and verification

For each format your app offers, submit a representative file through the actual app delivery path and check a known answer against its contents. Exercise the requested result, such as a prose summary or comparison, as well as structured extraction when required. Test unreadable, inaccessible and oversized inputs, and keep incomplete results distinct from success. A successful PDF extraction does not verify spreadsheet handling or every model.

In the extraction example, an empty or oversized file, unsupported MIME type, invalid task or obvious header mismatch fails before the AI request. A denied stored-file fetch also makes no AI request. Refusal, incomplete output, invalid JSON and schema mismatch leave no editable result. The form retains the selected file and never retries automatically. Other request failures include authentication, credit, rate-limit and provider errors; see AI error handling.

Verify the workflow with a known PDF and an image: compare extracted values to the originals, edit a field, and confirm no storage request occurs. For private media, repeat with an unauthorized session and confirm the content endpoint denies access and the completion endpoint is never called. Test a malformed document, a missing value and a file over the example limit before connecting your app’s save action.
